Quilts

A Word from Jenifer

I’ve been fortunate to have three fabulous seamstresses in my family: My Mother, Grandmother and Mother in law. Both my Mother and Grandmother were very talented and sewed many garments for myself and my younger brother when we were children. I was always intrigued by my Mother's sewing machine, but was never really “allowed” to touch it. Today, I can appreciate her concern and protectiveness regarding her machine. She had a wonderful Bernina - hence my love of the brand to this day. My Mother in law shared the love of quilting with me over 25 years ago.

When I started quilting, you had to create a template first and then trace those patterns onto your fabric, cut the pattern pieces with scissors and finally assemble your blocks. Then rotary cutters hit the market. To this day, using a rotary cutter and a ruler is still a wonderfully speedy tool, but the industry has advanced to die cutting. This is cutting fabric with a pressured roller using steel rule dies. We have quite an extensive steel rule die collection here at Studio 506. Fabric companies also provide beautiful and easy to use precut options which include but are not limited to: Charm packs, Jelly Rolls and Layer Cakes. The precut options give you a selection of prints from an entire coordinating fabric line.

After years of assembling quilt tops there came the issue of the quilting. I didn't feel comfortable with someone else “finishing” my creation, nor the funds - (I would rather spend the money on more fabric, right!) Which began the journey of researching an inexpensive but practical way to machine quilt my own pieces. I found a wonderful frame which I could use my domestic sewing machine on. I used my Bernia on a Handi Quilter frame. I truly enjoy working with fabric and get excited just thinking about a project - there are so many wonderful prints and textures. I have worked with cotton of course, denim and flannel - love them all. Please enjoy viewing my work!

In May of 2020, we upgraded to a Grace quilting frame and a mid arm Juki machine for quilting up to a king sized quilt. Jenifer has mastered the skill of free motion quilting. She chooses to use the "stipple or meandering" style of free motion quilting as it resembles the look of a puzzle piece and does not compete with your fabric prints, colors and block pattern. “It just finishes the piece with a wonderfully quilted pattern'' she says. This current setup has produced over 30 cotton and flannel quilts.
